Scene 16 – Mon.Day 1
Mon. Day 1
Su slips into her bathing suit as John takes off his shoes and socks and changes into his sandals. ” Dang, I forgot to get some beach shoes while I was there.” Su says.
” I thought you wanted to get those little strap lines on your feet?”
” Oh I’ve already got those. I wanted to get some of those neoprene shoes for walking in the mounds of shells,” She says showing him her feet. She knows it turns him on.
” Oh yeh! Look at that , nice toenails …Wanna run out?” he asks.
” Why thank you. No, when we take the kids I’ll get some. Dang it!”
” You sure?” he asks.
” Yeah, I’ll just wear my sandals for now. The little shells and the sand dig into my skin, that’s all.”
” It won’t take that long,” John says trying to convince her it is ok.
” No, it’ll take longer than I want, I just want to get out there.”
” You got everything?” he asks.
” Yes, just grab my chair for me, it’s outside.”
” Same place, out on the table.”
John looks at his pants ” I love having all these pockets.”
” Thanks for reminding me. Just bought those shelling nets and almost forgot them already.”
” Where?” he asks.
” On the counter.”
John puts his knife in his pocket, puts his hat on and lowers its neck drape, puts on his amber polarized fishing sunglasses and grabs the nets from the counter shoving them between his belt and his pants against his back.
Su grabs her beach bag, a few towels and gets a few bottles of water from the refrigerator.
They head towards the door.
” Got a bowl for Lucky?” he asks.
” In the bag.”
Su points her finger at him and twirls it.
“Eww, What?” he asks, jokingly twirling his finger back at her.
” You already asked me that. Brat,” Su says with a giggle.
John stares off into space for a second. ” Oh yeah.”
They both smirk.
” You coming, Luck?” Su asks Lucky.
Lucky’s tail thumps a few times and he gets up slowly making his way across the tiled floor. Su puts his collar and leash on him and he leads out the door.
John steps out locking the door behind them, grabs the sunscreen from the table, opening it and putting some on his nose. ” Love the smell of sunscreen on the beach in the morning.”
They walk the long path across the complex, to a sandy roped off path that leads to the beach. Su glances over at the cottage door they stayed at last time, but doesn’t get an eyeful this time.
” That place was so small. I really like the one we are in now,” she says.
” We spend most of our time outside anyway, it was good,” he replies.
” Yeah, I know. But it was so closed in.”
” Do what you can do y’know. That’s all we could last time. We had a great time,” he says.
” That we did. I just wish there was more room.”
” I gotcha. yeah. So where do you wanna set up camp?”
” Right over here where the soft sand meets the wet sand,” Su says after looking around.
John sets down her chair, opens it up and lays out a towel for Lucky and himself. Su moves the chair and situates her bag to her liking, sitting in the chair to make sure it is sunk sturdily into the sand and has the view she wants.
Lucky sits next to the chair on Su’s feet, panting for a bit. ” Luck! Get up. Don’t want you leaving a round brown kiss on my foot,” she says.
John starts laughing.
” I love him but geez.”
” Wanna go shelling together — or how you wanna do this?” John asks.
” Yes, let’s,” Su replies.
John reaches out his hand and helps Su out of the chair. Su holds onto the leash and they begin walking down the beach.
The sky is a bright blue with thin white and gray wisps throughout and there are two clouds, one above the other, they are pinkish orange and it looks like something has swiped through them cutting out the middle. There is a lighter blue patch of sky between them where it looks like it had been cut out.
Up close, the incoming tidewater is clear as it washes back and forth across the sand and white shells on the shoreline. Sea foam rides atop of the churning water this morning.
A little further out, the water is a sandy green, gradually getting darker for a half mile or so. A stark dark green line separates the deep water that runs the rest of the way to the horizon.
Walking across and quickly inspecting a thick patch of small shells. Lucky is biting at the waves. Su stoops over and picks up a shell while John is looking for some of the easier to find Common Jingles, Ceriths and Augers.
John steps through the water over to Su showing her a palm full of them. ” These the ones you like?” he asks.
” Yes, I really like those,” she says, looking at them.
” Every time you see one of these that I’ve picked up, you’ll know that I was thinking of you when I did,” he says.
” We’ve only been out here for a few minutes,” she remarks.
” I love you,” she says, realizing his intention.
” I love you. You’re probably gonna have a whole fish bowl of these by the time we leave.”
” Don’t forget about the Junonia,” she reminds him.
” Nope, keeping my eyes peeled for that one too. That’s our goal.”
John puts his head down scanning the ground. The wind is blowing through his draped hat and making his shirt ripple on his body like a flag. He smells and takes in the fresh air, the feel of the sun and sand washing across his feet.
” John. John,” he hears.
John looks up and sees Su standing next to Lucky holding up shells in her hands. John thinks, Wow, already? He quickly walks over to her. ” You found a Junonia already?”
” I wish. No I need one of the nets to carry shells in,” she says.
John laughs at his forgetfulness ” Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t even realize.”
” Pfft don’t worry about it,” she says.
” You want me to take him for a while?” he asks.
” No, we’re having fun. He keeps biting at the waves. I’m waiting for him to get knocked down by one of the larger ones.”
John laughs, ” that’d be funny.”
” He’s really getting into it, you might be able to get some pictures,” she suggests.
” Yeah, no problem.”
John walks over to the chair, dries off his hands, knocks off the sand and digs in the bag for the camera. Pulling it out, he inspects to make sure the battery and the memory card are in it. Looking through the view finder he starts taking pictures of Su and Lucky, trying to get them in the same frame. The long leash is preventing him from getting good shots of them together.
Shouting “Hey” through the wind and waves, he raises his arms high in the air to get her attention.
She looks up and he walks towards her. ” Get closer to Lucky,” he says.
Su puts her hand to her ear, ” what?”
Knowing she won’t be able to hear him he walks to her, ” Lucky is too far out on the leash. I can’t get a good picture of y’all. I can get a picture with both of you in the same shot but only from far away. Let’s try to get him close to you for a couple of pictures.”
” Ok. Come here Luck,” Su says.
John steps back twenty feet and immediately starts taking pictures. He gets a good picture of Lucky biting the waves with Su off to the side.
As soon as Su calls him, Lucky looks up at her and gets hit by one of the larger waves that splashes over his head and soaks him. Lucky seems dazed at first then closes his eyes to keep the salt water out and looks like he is having a hard time seeing. Lucky turns around quickly trying to get out of the waves way and begins to shake off the water when he gets rear ended by another wave.
Su starts laughing and John gets a picture of Su laughing while Lucky is trying to get away from the water sneezing.
Su and John meet as Su heads to the chair to give Lucky a break.
” Did you see that?” Su asks laughing.
“ Yeah, I got it on camera,” John replies.
” Yeah, that was so funny.”
Lucky walks through the soft sand over to where they are and lays down in the sand sneezing and trying to clean the water off his face with his paws.
” Awe poor boy, that was refreshing huh?” Su says.
” I bet he’s like ” Yeah right, Mom,”
” Oh God, that was good,” Su says.
” Pretty good. How you doin’ buddy? You want some water?” John asks.
They both laugh. Not out of meanness, they would never want him to get hurt or hurt his feelings or anything like that. Lucky handled it like a champ.
” Probably doesn’t want any water for the rest of the day,” John says, pulling Lucky’s water bowl and a bottle of water out of the bag emptying the water into the bowl. Lucky laps it up and John pours more water into the bowl.
” That was good,” Su says.
” Another one for the books.”
They sit for a while on the beach while Lucky lays near them. ” I’m gonna get back at it, you coming?” he asks.
” I think I’m gonna rest for a while and soak it in.”
” All right, let me get one closeup picture of you staring out at the water.”
” Just one more of you, in your element, it’ll be good, I promise.”
” Ok, one more. Where do you want me?” she asks with a sigh.
” Just stay right there. Let Sanibel do the work. I want you to feel the sun and the breeze on your face while staring out looking for dolphins.”
Su stares out at the green water, the wind blows in her hair. John walks around her and catches a glimpse of a partial rainbow in the sky. He lines the rainbow up on one side of the picture and Su on the other side and zooms in, capturing the moment.
” That is going to be a great shot. Wow!” John says, amazed that he got such a photo.
” Why is that? Are we done?” Su asks.
” Yeah sorry, wait til you see it,” he says kind of giddy.
” Why? Tell me,” she asks curiously.
John points to the sky. ” See that rainbow?” Su looks and doesn’t see it. ” No.”
John is looking down at the camera trying to find the picture to show her. When he looks up, pointing to where the rainbow was, he sees it is now gone.
” It was there,” he says, staring into the sky trying to figure out where it went. “ I got a real nice still of you and that rainbow. It’s completely you! It was like it was meant to be taken. Totally you in your element.”
” I don’t see it,” Su says.
” It was there, believe me. I got it on camera.”
” Let me see.”
” Hang on I’m trying to find it — ok here it is, but it’s hard to see the rainbow in this little window with the glare of the sun. You’ll probably need to be inside to see a good view of it, but I swear there was a rainbow there.”
” Let me see!” Su says anxiously.
John hands the camera to Su and she looks at the picture. ” I don’t see it. Oh wait I see something but can’t tell what it is. Looks like a cloud.”
” You’ll see it when we get inside in a different kind of light.”
Su starts looking through several of the other pictures and starts laughing when she sees the one of Lucky biting the waves and the one of him after he got hit by a wave. ” Good memories.”
” Yes they are,” he agrees.
John watches her look through the pictures for a minute or so and sits down next to Lucky and pets him for a few moments.
” Welp, I’m going shelling,” he says.
” Whelk, ok,” Su says.
” Like the Whelk shell, Whelk ok?” she tries to explain.
” Good one! I love you baby, I’ll stay within view.”
” Have fun.”
” Ju-no- nia it. Get it ? John replies.
Su smiles “Ju-no-I-do crazy man.”
John starts singing ” Craazay …. It’s delightful, it’s delicous, it’s d’lovely, I’m d’crazy about youuu.”
” Get out of here and find me a Junonia, brat.”
John walks away backwards singing ” Brat wurst …. It’s delightful, it’s delicious, it’s d’dinner.”. Then turns around, head down, up the beach.
” Steaks tonite,” she yells to him.
Su smiles and talks to Lucky as John heads down the beach looking for and picking up shells, “You know Luck? He can be such a dork sometimes … You know who better not walk by right now or John is shit out of luck….”
