Scene 19 – Mon.Day 4
After thoroughly enjoying their dinner they relax on the couch.
” I’m gonna make some truffles tonite,” John says.
” Oh God, I don’t even want think about dessert now, that was so good.”
” Very good, maybe we’ll cut the steaks like that every time.”
“No, there were a few burnt places along the edge. We should cut ’em even, but they still turned out great,” she says.
” Alright, that was very good though.”
” And juicy, we never go wrong with that cut of meat.”
” Nope,” John shakes his head.
” Not long before sunset,” Su says.
” Looks kind of stormy.”
Su looks out the window and doesn’t say anything. They sit back on the couch relaxing while staring out the window at the beach and watching a funny game show on TV.
Lucky gets up and walks across the tiles to the bedroom. A few minutes later Su and John hear a “thump” in the next room. Su and John look at one another.
” What was that?” Su asks suspiciously.
” Oh man.” John gets up and starts walking to the bedroom. Su follows closely behind. They find Lucky laying on the blanket near the cooler at the foot of the bed shaking. “ Awe buddy, you ok?” Su asks.
” Hey buddy, what happened?” John asks as he looks around, everything is still in place. Su is petting him trying to make him feel better.
” I bet he missed or his legs gave out on him or something,” John says.
” Or maybe he slipped off,” Su says.
” Wanna try to get him up there?” he asks.
” I don’t know.” Su keeps petting him as his shakes start to go away. Lucky clacks his tongue and yawns, panting hard.
Su pats the bed, ” you want up here buddy?” Lucky looks up and gets to his feet, head pointed at the top of the bed. ” Come on buddy, you know how,” Su encourages him. Lucky puts the top of his head under Su’s chin and pants. She can feel the heat coming off the top of his head, ” Awe buddy, he’s my baby,” she says, putting her arm around him trying to comfort him some more. ” Ok buddy. Show me. Show me what you want.”
Lucky stands on all fours. Su stands up and Lucky tucks his head pressing his forehead to her knees. Su walks to the doorway and Lucky pushes past her, going into the living room and laying down on the towel in front of the window.
” Poor guy, I think he tried getting up on the bed and slipped off. I hope he’s ok,” she says, in a concerned tone.
” I think you’re right. I was checking him out as he was walking and he looked like he was ok, just his normal limp.”
” Go check him,” she says.
John walks over to Lucky. Lucky looks up at him. John kneels down. petting his head. ” You alright buddy?” Lucky pushes his head into John’s hand and closes his eyes as John scratches his forehead.
Reaching down feeling along Lucky’s legs to see if he reacts, he feels his front legs and paws and Lucky acts normal. John continues to feel along his back legs and paws and Lucky looks back. John lightly squeezes his paws, up his legs to his hips and gets no response, other than Lucky continuing to look back. ” Alright buddy, stand up for me,” John tells Lucky.
John slides his hand under Lucky and gently lifts and Lucky sits up. ” Paw.” Lucky gives him his paw. ” Other paw.” Lucky pants with a smiling look on his face and gives John his other paw, playfully licking at him.
John stands up, walks in the kitchen and gets a couple of Lucky treats, ” Luck!”
Lucky looks up, ears perked and sees John holding biscuits in the air. He pushes up, standing on all fours and walks normally over to John taking the biscuits. Turning around walking back to the blanket, he lays down and eats them.
” I think he’s alright. Did you see anything?” John says after watching him get up and go lay back down.
” No, maybe limping a little more than usual, but not much more.”
” We’ll keep an eye on him.”
Su and John watch him as he eats his biscuits, watching for any signs of abnormal discomfort or pain.
” Think we oughta leave him here when we go out for the sunset?” John asks.
” I don’t see why, if he wants to go, bring him with us.”
” Alright, just thought in case he aggravated his hip, maybe we should let him rest.”
” If he wants to stay, I’m sure he’ll let us know, he always does.”
” True,” John nods.
Su and John watch Lucky’s every move until the sun starts getting close to the water. ” I think he’s good. “ ‘Bout ready?” John asks.
” Yes, could you take pictures of the sunset tonite?”
” Yeah sure, doesn’t look like it’s gonna be a great photo op though.”
” It is pretty cloudy. I don’t know, I just have this feeling of wanting to catch this one on camera for some reason.”
” Yeah, no problem. Memories. Um where is it?”
” Oh, out it in my beach bag,” she says.
” Oh babe, don’t leave that outside like that.”
” No one’s gonna steal it.”
” Bullshit, that’s a $700 camera. They’ll steal it if it’s just sitting around,” John says.
” I forgot, jeez.”
” I didn’t mean it like that, I’m sorry,” he says.
” It’s ok.”
” It’s ok.”
At the same time they say it together. ” It’s ok!” and burst out in laughter together.
” Think it’s time?” Su asks. Lucky looks back over his butt at Su and starts thumping the ground with his tail and stands up on all fours.
” Wow that’s the fastest I think I’ve seen him get up in a long time,” Su says.
” I reckon he’s ok then.
John grabs Lucky’s leash, puts the collar around his neck and walks out on the deck. Su takes the leash from John as he grabs the camera out of the bag. He quickly checks the battery life. ” All set.”
Su makes her way down the stairs to the dune path and John follows, looking through the view finder of the camera until they reach the highest portion of the dunes on the beach.
Only a few people are on the beach in the distance, the wind is blowing at a pretty good clip. It’s warm and muggy with cooler patches of air mixed in with the breeze.
Weeds dot the dunes in a straight line up and down the beach. White shells on the white sand make it look like snow on the ground against a dark gray clouded sky with long, stretching clouds almost a gray plum color. Dark upper level clouds are lined along their bottom with a bright orange and pink glow. Below that is a strip of white cloud that is outlined with a dark low lying cloud that is building into a large wave-like structure.
The gulf isn’t flat, yet it still seems calm, gently pushing and pulling waves to and from shore as the pink, orange and yellow cloud-covered sun glows atop the water and disappears beneath the horizon.
The afterglow on this particular night is a gray purple. The beach becomes cooler and John snaps a few pictures.
” You smell that?” he asks.
” Rain?” Su replies.
” Yeah, smelled it a little while ago,” he says.
John feels something tap him on the shoulder and he looks by pulling his shirt. ” Phew, rain. Thought it was bird crap for a second.”
” Don’t feed the birds,” Su says.
” I know it man. One time I saw some tourists on the beach and they thought it would be nice to feed the birds, I’m guessing, I don’t really know what they were thinking. But anyway, they start feeding the birds and the birds swarmed them.”
” First timers, they don’t know.”
” Yeah, I did it once and they crapped all over me, never did it again though,” John says, shaking his head and laughing at himself.
John feels the taps on his arms again and sees that it is rain drops. ” You stayin’?” he asks.
” No, I’m going back in, I saw what I wanted to see.”
” Awe come on, you don’t wanna stand out here in the rain?” he says playfully.
” No, not tonight, I just wanna relax, it’s been another long day.”
” I’m with you.”
All of them walk back through the sand to the cottage, rinse off and go inside.
” No stickers this time,” John points out.
” No stickers! Puppy’s feet must feel a lot better today huh?” Su says in her cutsie voice. ” He didn’t seem to have much of a problem tonite even after his, whatever happened?” she continues.
” Nope I didn’t see him having any problems,” John says.
” Good we can sit back and just enjoy a nice relaxing evening.”
” Sounds good to me. I think I’ll save making the truffles for tomorrow,” John says.
” We have all that cheesecake to eat,” she reminds him.
They relax for a while in the dim lit room for awhile, then John gets up and fixes them a plate of the cheesecake and coffee.
After dessert, they all sit outside watching the lightning in the clouds until the bugs get too bad to tolerate.
They lock up, help Lucky into bed and retire early themselves.
